Retribution

Allen and his friend Scott have had a bit of a drought in fishing.  I think they have caught exactly 0.0 fish in the last several months.  Saturday they went out and got their retribution.  I am so happy for them.NIK_6916

While we do enjoy the really fresh fish, I kind of felt bad for them.  They were discouraged.  5 Mahi Mahi and a snapper changed their attitude.

Miller is obsessed with all things that swim in the ocean, so he was very excited to see these.  Yes he did give the fish a massage.

Here’s to many more fruitful days of fishing!

Fishing

Saturday was a really busy day for our family.  We started with 2 soccer games at 9 a.m. Then immediately following that, Allen and Jackson were in a fishing tournament, and that evening we went to the Marine Corps Ball.  Phew!

The Generations Junior Angler Fishing tournament is highly anticipated here because the kids are the entrants and the parents are just the transportation. Entry is by boat and each boat usually has several junior anglers on it.  The boat they were on didn’t win, but they did have a great time.  And in my book, “If you had fun, you won!”

We were fortunate that Allen sent me these pictures as the tournament was ending, because he had an unfortunate Blackberry accident at the end.  {If you know Allen, you realize the trauma that comes with a Blackberry accident!}  He was able to dive in and retrieve it, but even though he rinsed it with fresh water and put it in a bowl of rice for 24 hours, it was a goner.

He also lost his sunglasses too.  Poor guy dropped them as they were trying to get rid of this guy…IMG00056-20131109-1320

He didn’t go after them.  I am picturing this angry shark swimming around with Allen’s Ray Bans on him!

Poor Allen, but he was a good sport about it!

Sea School

We were out on our dock recently when we saw a sea urchin that was close enough for me to get.  I didn’t want to kill it, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to let the boys check it out up close and personal.
So I grabbed a pair of metal tongs and a container and popped him off of the pillar.
NIK_3157
I love that we are able to do these things and I hope they boys will remember some of the things we do here.
NIK_3161
We saw that when the sea urchin is submerged it has little white suction cups that come out in between its spikes.  Cool!NIK_3162
I also had to include pictures of Jackson being goofy.  I just love the color of his eyes.  So rich!

It's tough to see, but there are also these clear-ish long tentacles that come off of the urchin too.  They are almost like hairs that you can barely see on the left side of this picture.NIK_3168NIK_3169
NIK_3181
Miller wasn’t feeling well, but I did manage to get him to check out the sea urchin for a minute.NIK_3184
Then daddy came home from work and he checked it out too.
NIK_3186
They turned him over to look at the sea urchin’s mouth.
NIK_3188
Apparently Sea Urchin {uni} is a popular dish in Asia.  I’ll take their word for it!
NIK_3191
Then it was time to put him back in the water.  Jackson would not allow me to help him.
NIK_3198
He gently put him in the water.  This picture cracks me up because he was wearing shoes.  He never wears shoes and when he needs to be barefoot, he has on shoes!?! And socks!NIK_3199
Since I was barefoot, I took him a little deeper in the water.
NIK_3205
The the 10 seconds or so that it took me to walk back around to the dock, that sea urchin moved quickly.  He was making himself disappear, and quick!NIK_3206
Then look what appeared in the algae on the other side of the dock…
NIK_3207
How could I not catch him.  Raise your hand if you had a shirt that said, “I Caught Crabs at Bay Bridge Marina”.
NIK_3209
Yes, I did!  When I was little, too.  My dad owned a marina and that’s what the shirts said.
NIK_3216
Wish I had one of those shirts now!
NIK_3220NIK_3224
Allen helped us get crabby into the container that was very recently occupied by the sea urchin.
NIK_3225
His colors were amazing.NIK_3227
I think I see a painting coming soon!NIK_3236
Any time our hands got near the side of the container, he let us know he was ready to fight!
NIK_3252
I don’t blame him, but we gave him some small pieces of hot dogs as a gesture of goodwill and he acted as though he didn’t want it.  RUDE!
NIK_3262
Meanwhile Miller wrapped himself in the tablecloth, snuggled up on my lap and went to sleep.  Bless him, he had a fever.
NIK_3279
We put the crab back in the water and put he boys to bed.  I hope they had sweet dreams of adventures in the sea!

The Big One!

I {big puffy} heart this picture.

2013-06-22 18.45.17 (5)

These guys went fishing after quite a long time of no fishing.  Boat problems!  They headed out for a Saturday afternoon of fishing. And brought home this beauty.

I can hear Scott now, “Put it closer, it makes it looks bigger!”

Usually there are photos like this..

Backyard Explorations

On Sunday the boys were playing in our backyard and I grabbed my camera.

We were feeding our leftovers from breakfast to the fish.  Turns out that my boys do not love turkey sausage, but the fish really do!

NIK_2832

I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of fish this is.  So far we call it zebra fish.  We are scientists of the highest order, right?

NIK_2874

It lives in that PVC pipe that we added to our “aquarium” last winter.

NIK_2838

The angel fish were trying to squeeze sausage pieces into their tiny mouths.

NIK_2878

We saw a baby barracuda hanging out in the algae.  This one was about the size of my thumb.

NIK_2828-001

The hermit crabs were in the algae too.  The algae is probably like Cracker Barrel on Sunday mornings.  It’s the place to eat on the weekends!

NIK_2837

Another small barracuda and a conch!NIK_2842

Jackson found his first conch.NIK_2851

Not sure how it ended up on our beach, but it was fun to look at.NIK_2868

Once we put him back in the water we got to see his eyes.

NIK_2987NIK_2988

Hank tried to scare off the little fish that swim in the shallow waters.

NIK_2893

He is not the aggressive type, so no fish were harmed.NIK_2883

Miller did what he does best!NIK_2920

Then he decided to help his brother hunt the fish.NIK_2941NIK_2950NIK_2967

The caught a rock.  The fish were pretty safe!

NIK_2953

Sometimes I do dream about having a nice grassy backyard, but I really like this backyard very much!
