The Very Hungry Toddler

I love Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar.  If you’ve been living under a rock…the caterpillar eats through all these foods and then goes into a cocoon and turns into a beautiful caterpillar.
Miller decided to recreate the story in his own Miller way.
When am I ever going to learn, if he’s quiet…

He’s making a mess!
Yep, that container was full when I started my laundry.

  1. I taught a lot of babies to swim in Singapore. Here's how.:

Put them belly down in about 2 inches of water. If you have access to a graduated baby pool that's the best. Then just sit there and talk, listen to music whatever as your baby explores the water. They will gradually go out into deeper and deeper at their own pace. Eventually they begin to paddle on their own. It's lovely.

Some babies like to immediately go for it. Some even like to jump off the edge. Just different styles of learning. Just be there to lift them up out of the deep water and be sure to laugh and praise. Do not display anxiety even if you feel it. Just tell them that you are nervous when they do this but it's OK because you are there to make sure it's OK.

If you only have a yard pool then fill it a few inches and let them play. When they are comfortable, add some more water. Then wait until they are comfortable with that. You can add more and more each time but be sure to go at your child's pace. It may take hours, days, weeks or months. I don't know I just go by what they want.

For older children get some flippers at a yard sale. Then you can go into deeper water like knee deep or so. Then have the child lie belly down in the water with the flippers on. Use goggles if you want to protect the eyes and allow them to see the bottom. Tell the child to put their hands on the bottom, hold their breath and try, just try to go under. They won't be able to because they will keep staying on the surface. Then when they are comfortable with that have them kick a little. They will swim in about 30 minutes. I can't teach this here at the Y pool as I don't have a Red Cross Swimming License. Sick huh?

Now when learning the crawl determine whether the person is right or left handed. If you are right handed then you must turn your head to the left to take your breath. Unless you are an Olympic swimmer in which case you breath from both sides. Ha! Lots of luck on that.I corrected a young teen takding lessons in Singapore on that and in a moth or so whe was on the swimming team. Something I could never get on. But all my students, no maktter what I was teaching, always did better than I could ever have dreamed of doing. Discouraging..
